The Shooting Range, Thursday Morning

Because Alec was officially the most welcoming of all fake siblings ever, suck it Natalie Adams, no sooner had he met his new little sibling Kate yesterday than they had made plans to go to the shooting range today. And because Fandom had no shortage of professional arms models archers, they even had a judge lined up to oversee the proceedings. In the epic battle of recurve versus longbow, only the world's best archer could be the judge.

Because Clint definitely didn't have anything better to do on the week of his birthday than watch two teenagers shoot stuff, right?

So Alec and his recurve bow and Kate and her arms longbow made their way to the range, where Alec promptly swung his arms awkwardly and looked around. "So... how should we do this?"

"I mean competitively," Alec sighed. "I've never seen people compete at this before."

"You should definitely check out the YouTube videos of Olympic archery," she said. Kate probably wouldn't admit to how long she'd spent watching those. "It's kind of awesome and also totally hilarious how easy they have it with flags and stuff to tell them about wind speed and direction."

Real archers didn't need wind speed flags, dammit.

"They usually compete with distance or points," said the girl who'd learned how to shoot at summer camp. "Or we could just shoot the same number of arrows and see how it ends up."

Alec nodded. "Let's do that," he agreed, since it sounded like the easiest option. "Do you have a preference on who goes first?"

His precision runes should probably hold for long enough that he'd be fine either way, so he thought he'd be a gentleman and ask.

Yeah, using runes while shooting competitively was probably a little bit like using steroids, but... shut up.

Nah, it was cool. Kate didn't expect people with superpowers to know how to get by without them. That's how it worked, right?

"You go on. Lots of five?" she checked. And then, hey, they could keep going until they got bored. Or forever since who got bored doing this? Kate was kind of a dork about this one thing.

Well, if it came to the point that Alec was losing miserably multiple times in a row, he might put a stop to it, but only because he had Natalie Issues...

In any event, he nocked an arrow, took a few moments to line up his first shot toward the target, drew back, and released.

His first arrow landed close to the center of the target but a little bit noticably off-center; thrown off by that, he botched his next few shots too, and by the time he'd fired all five, he had three arrows on the edge of the second-innermost circle while the other two hovered more than a few inches away.

Well. That was terrible.

"I'm-- usually better," he mumbled, wincing somewhat at his handiwork.

Natalie wasn't going to suck anything of yours, Alec, thank you very much. She was wandering down here this morning, though, because she was due for a bow of her own, and wanted to check out the range.

She was surprised to see people here. Things looked like they could even get interesting, so she stayed.

Alec managed to keep his scowling at seeing Natalie in 'his territory' fairly minimal, as he was aware that this was a public place and being scowly was irrational and childish. Still, that didn't stop him asking the condescending question, "Are you waiting for someone?"

Because she had no bow, see, and he refused to believe that she knew how to use one. Real nice, Alec.

Natalie's spiteful side (a little more prominent these days, with allher stress) made her want to offer to text Jace to get him here. But she didn't go with that.

"No," she said, looking utterly unaffected by his unnecessary condescension. "I'm just looking around."

Alec gestured. "Lanes. Bows. Equipment. It's not that complex."

Alec was the nicest guy ever.

Yeah, Natalie's blank look completely agreed. "Is there something you're afraid of right now, Alec?"

Because she felt like he was trying to shoo her away. Passive-aggressively.

That got an eyebrow-raise out of him, even though yep, Natalie was spot-on right there. "Should there be?"

Well, you know. Losing to a mundie in front of his mortal enemy, etc.

Of course things would get interesting. The bows were coming out!

Kate nodded to the other girl. "Hey. Were you going to shoot too?" Okay, so she doubted it given the tension between Alec & her, but you never knew. It could be sexy tension. (Okay, no, it probably was not)

It was most definitely not sexy tension. But there were a few people who would have paid to hear that implied out loud, for the great hilarity of it!

"No," she said. "My bow's yet to be purchased. I'm just here to see how the range is."

"It's a whole lot better equipped than I'd have expected a school range to be," she said. And her old school made Kate familiar with well-equipped. "What kind of bow are you looking at?"

"I don't know yet," Natalie had to admit, although it was as mild as all her other output. "Clint's supposed to pick for me. I think his exact words were 'an awesome one'."

Clint was going to be teaching for the first time tomorrow so really, he had all the time in the world today to be doing anything but thinking about that. Plus, he was usually on his own when it came to archery interest, so finding out that there was apparently another student who liked to shoot was worth seeing.

Yeah, Natalie had figured out it was a contest, even if Alec hadn't said as much.

"You two not like each other or something?" Somehow, the idea that any of the people who, for whatever reason, wanted to hang around him might not like each other had never actually occurred to Clint. "You can stay. Thus sayeth the grownup."
