The Shooting Range, Thursday Morning

Because Alec was officially the most welcoming of all fake siblings ever, suck it Natalie Adams, no sooner had he met his new little sibling Kate yesterday than they had made plans to go to the shooting range today. And because Fandom had no shortage of professional arms models archers, they even had a judge lined up to oversee the proceedings. In the epic battle of recurve versus longbow, only the world's best archer could be the judge.

Because Clint definitely didn't have anything better to do on the week of his birthday than watch two teenagers shoot stuff, right?

So Alec and his recurve bow and Kate and her arms longbow made their way to the range, where Alec promptly swung his arms awkwardly and looked around. "So... how should we do this?"

"Aren't there other places you could be using your phone?" Alec interjected, abandoning the sematics discussion. He didn't know why, but he knew that something about Natalie was unnerving him right now.

The phone went back in her pocket after that. "It's a public space."

"I noticed that," he said. "But it's supposed to have a purpose, which some of us here are trying to achieve. Are you just going to stand here?"

She wasn't exactly standing in front of the targets or anything, Alec.

"You could be less in my way," Alec replied. Which was about as much of an answer as hers had been.

Well, Natalie had thought his question pretty ridiculous, so. "I'm standing here, in no way obstructing you from shooting your arrows," she pointed out. "Everything else should be irrelevant. Unless you actually have a problem with me specifically being here."

"I have a problem with you specifically being here," Alec replied.

This probably came as quite a shock. If you needed to lie down for a moment, Natalie, Alec would understand.

Natalie's expression didn't change, not even a little bit. Calm and mild as ever. And no, she wasn't surprised.

"Why?"

She just wanted to hear what he'd say.

"I think you've noticed by now that we aren't exactly best friends," Alec said. He wasn't about to put the actual reason into words, so he went with being condescending instead.

Well, he was. And maybe in some way, she was too. She just made it far harder to accuse her of it, point blank.

"But you're at least supposedly a good archer. I can't stay to watch and learn?"

"You can do what you want," Alec sighed, filing the 'jealous' remark away in a mental file of things to not discuss ever. He was so great at pretending he had no issues, trufax. "Try not to be too distracting."

Like Natalie was ever distracting to a normal person.

Look, she was already being not-distracting. Also quietly amused at him, but at least she didn't let that show.
