The Shooting Range, Thursday Morning

Because Alec was officially the most welcoming of all fake siblings ever, suck it Natalie Adams, no sooner had he met his new little sibling Kate yesterday than they had made plans to go to the shooting range today. And because Fandom had no shortage of professional arms models archers, they even had a judge lined up to oversee the proceedings. In the epic battle of recurve versus longbow, only the world's best archer could be the judge.

Because Clint definitely didn't have anything better to do on the week of his birthday than watch two teenagers shoot stuff, right?

So Alec and his recurve bow and Kate and her arms longbow made their way to the range, where Alec promptly swung his arms awkwardly and looked around. "So... how should we do this?"

[[up crazy early because so am I, la la la. for the archers, but open!]]

"So I've gathered." She'd even asked him to take someone down for her, once! Of course, that had actually been in alternate universe. But still. "I'm Natalie, by the way."

Because she was nicer when she wasn't talking to Alec.

"Kate," she said. "New kid, obviously." Someone who hated to say that that much shouldn't have randomly changed schools. "Alec thinks his recurve bow is anyway comparable to a longbow so I had to come prove him wrong."

That was by way of explanation for this whole range thing today, yes.

Natalie had figured as much. Alec didn't seem to have a highly competitive streak to her (except perhaps for the attention of certain tawny-eyed people), but it seemed to be a Shadowhunter thing to have your fair share of pride in your abilities.

"So, why is a longbow better?"

Hey, she was always open to learning.

"If you're good enough to overcome the efficiency issue, they're more powerful & way more flexible," Kate said. Also the form was more forgiving when superheroics were needed - which was a bonus.

...also when someone gives you the bow of a dead superhero, you learn to love that bow best of all.

That would do it! "I'll keep that in mind," Natalie nodded. "Doesn't really sound like a beginner's thing, though."

"Depends on how much frustration you like with your practice," Kate said. "Hopefully you don't hate yourself that much."

"It's more of a hobby, so, no. Probably a little too much frustration for me." Even though she dealt with a fair bit of frustration in her daily life as it was, currently. "It's enough just to practice the basics."

But seriously, it was true with the breathing and the conscious movement and...shut up.

"Well, it does serve some of the same purposes," Natalie noted, her tone exactly as mild as it had been this entire time. "With the focusing and the breathing, and everything."

What? She hadn't even had to read that from Kate's narrative! That was a big part of why she'd picked this particular hobby up, after all. Sure, it was potentially practical for a Fandomite, but mostly it gave her something to focus on. Much like when she played piano, too.

Like the girl ever had taken the subway in her life, but still.

"Mmhmm." Natalie raised one eyebrow just a bit. Hey, if this girl knew Clint, she thought it was okay to guess that those rats may have been a little bit metaphorical. "Think it works on gremlins?"

That was not metaphorical.

"Sometimes," Natalie shrugged. "They like biting people, and their teeth have some kind of a powerful hallucinogenic on them."

So clearly they were everyone's favourite.
