Room 401, Sunday Afternoon

As of a trip to the mainland this morning, Alec was now the proud owner of a longbow.

It was, obviously, long (seriously long; Alec was six-two and the bow was probably about the same) and even if he didn't dwell on how exactly he intended to carry it around to the range and to places where he might need it (for example, home), he did have to come to a conclusion on where to store it in his room. Ideally soon, because the more he stood and looked around for a place for it, the more he kind of wanted to take it to the range and break it in, and he'd already done his training for the day with his recurve.

The obvious answer, 'under his bed,' was eluding him so far. He'd get there.

"Roughly even," Jace repeated. "What does that mean?"

"You know, approximately a tie." Even though ties were, by nature, pretty precise. And non-approximate.

"Uh huh." Yeah he totally didn't believe you, Alec. "Well that's good then. Be pretty embarrassing if you lost to a mundie. She's a mundie, right?"

"You know, I didn't ask," Alec said, feeling a bit more optimistic all of a sudden. "Maybe not. She definitely had... skills."

"You know I didn't expect you to do the sibling thing for anyone." Not because he didn't think Alec did a good job at being a sibling to him, but he wasn't exactly the type to want to be around strangers.

"I didn't exactly volunteer," Alec admitted. "The school just paired me with her. But she's interesting, and we at least have the archery thing in common, so I don't mind."

Even if she seemed to like Natalie more than Alec would have liked. Sigh.

"Got lucky then," Jace said. "You could have been stuck with someone completely dull."

"Yes, I escaped that particular torture," Alec agreed. "I take it the school still hasn't given you someone to mentor?"

"No, thank the Angel," Jace said. "That wouldn't end well."

"The person would end up in tears, most likely," Alec said. "Probably not even in a way that you'd be entertained by it."

"So true." Or, if Jace did get along with them, there was a good chance Alec would be the one to make them cry. Speaking of...

"The girl's name is Kate?"

True. Very true.

"Yeah." Poor Kate. She had no idea what kind of crazy fake/real family she'd been shoved into. "Kate Bishop. She's in our year, I think."

"I'll keep an eye out for her," Jace said. "Don't worry, I'll treat her with just as much kindness and respect as you do Natalie."

"I still don't see how that's fair," Alec complained, totally hypocritically. "You already said you'd be doing that to Sparkle. Shouldn't it be one person each?"

Alec, how was that even a rule?

Jace pretended to take that into consideration for a moment. "Nope. I'm pretty sure I'm going to bother everyone you're involved with."

"I somehow expected that to be the answer," Alec sighed.
